Greenbelt: Federal Jobs Strategy

Greenbelt: Federal Jobs Strategy

In 2023, the General Services Administration (GSA) selected Prince George’s County’s Greenbelt as the site of the new Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Headquarters. The GSA identified Greenbelt as being the most ideal location for FBI employees, surrounding residents, and our nation for being the most:

  • cost-effective – saving American taxpayers billions of dollars

  • build-ready – having a site prepared for construction as soon as possible

  • transportation-accessible option – having a metro stop on-site

After the conclusion of the extensive multi-year GSA procurement that lasted over a decade, we are excited and eager to get to work with the FBI. We anticipate the new FBI headquarters bringing economic benefits to our community and changing our local economy for generations to come. The GSA’s decision helps rebalance federal jobs in the region and ensures equitable spending on federal investments.

As of 2023, roughly 135,000 of the region’s 675,000 federal workers live in Prince George’s County, yet we only host 4% of the region’s federal jobs. The County is working towards a set goal of increasing our percentage of the region's federal jobs to at least 10% of the region’s total – bringing more than  40,000 additional jobs for County residents. This FBI move will bring 7,500 federal jobs directly to Prince George’s County, as well as all the contractors associated with the FBI. This creates an opportunity for us to demonstrate the attractiveness of Prince George’s County to other federal agencies looking for new sites. The FBI Headquarters will be a pillar in our community that will attract new companies in sectors that are critical to the FBI’s mission, such as technology and cybersecurity.

Now that the GSA has selected Greenbelt as the new site of the FBI, work is underway to ensure our nation’s primary law enforcement agency successfully and efficiently completes their transition to Prince George’s County. The State has committed $200M in the 2022 Maryland General Assembly Session over FY 2023 and FY 2024 to improve infrastructure for this highly anticipated move. Prince George’s County is on the rise, as we continue to develop along the Blue Line Corridor and residents deserve jobs that bring both security and economic development to the region.

The County has an established, unmatched STEM research ecosystem and a university pipeline of skilled workers in high-demand careers that are critical to the mission of the FBI. Thanks to this decision on Greenbelt, opportunities and programs will only continue to grow in Prince George’s and residents will continue to thrive in the workforce. Our goal is to help the FBI build a headquarters that allows the agency to grow and better meet the needs of Americans in the 21st century.
